YL Remote
26 / 27 Feb 2022

A few weeks ago, my friend Raisa, R1BIG, suggested that I work with her and 3 other YLs from different countries at a Canadian club station, "remotely". For this I had to download the RCForb Client on the page remotehams.com (you will find a link below). With this software I then had the image of a radio on my monitor. I had to click the PTT button with the mouse and used a headset to listen and speak. The call sign of the Canadian station is VE3IHR, the operator and organizer of our activity was Rob, VE3PCP, from the Inverhuron Radio Club (also here is a link below). Rob has set the transceiver to the desired frequencies for us. YL Alicia, VA3KGZ, from Canada, did the CQ calling. We then worked the answered stations one after the other.

Many thanks to Rob, VE3PCP, who made this activity possible for us and also created the video you can watch above, and many thanks to the girls: Alicia (VE3KGZ, Canada), Dora (HB9EPE, Switzerland), Raisa (R1BIG, Russia) and Yvette (DL9YJ, Yvette)! It was a lot of fun and I hope we can repeat that soon

Flora & Fauna DLFF-0861

Seit 1.

...

Since January 1, 2022, the Spandau Forest has been added to the list of habitats for the Flora & Fauna Diploma. I submitted an application in September 2021. Now I can just cross the street for a flora & fauna activity, because the Spandau Forest starts just 5m from my front door. On January 8, 2022 I planned to do the first activation of DLFF-0861. Although it had snowed the night before, the sun came out during the day. I loaded my portable equipment with the Yaesu FT 857d and the LiFePo4 battery as well as the necessary antenna equipment into my handcart and set off. There is a playground in the Spandau Forest, which I can reach in a few minutes on foot. There I set up my shack under a wooden roof and put up my tri-band antenna and the VHF wire antenna.

At the same time DG2HVL - Anselm - had gone to the Döberitzer Heide. We really wanted to do at least one QSO with each other. I had already informed all YLs and OMs of the D06 about my project the evening before in our OV round on DB0SP and by email and I was now hoping and looking forward to some contacts. The first QSO was then also with Anselm, DG2HVL, on 28.444 Mhz. Dieter, DL7HD, and Hermann, DL7AKV followed. Also on 20m I was able to log QSOs with Anselm and Hermann, and on our OV frequency Lars, DL7ALM, Hermann, DL7AKV, and Anselm, DG2HVL.

Finally I wanted get started on shortwave and 20m, but I had visitors. DO5JRR, Olaf, and his XYL strolled across the playground to my portable shack, and DL7JU (Jens) with DL7CAU (Christina) and DO6LR (Lars) also showed up. At that moment my radio friend Raisa (aka R1BIG) called me, who is currently qrv from her 'Elk-Shack' in Finland with her brand new call sign OH7BG. She knew about my radio activity and that I would be active on the Flora & Fauna frequency 14.244 Mhz. With her I made my first international QSO from the Spandau Forest. We made a little small talk, which we usually have little opportunity for. She promised to place a spot for me in the DX cluster later.

We took a few photos with my visitors before they said goodbye. On their way back through the forest, they called me again on their handheld radios. Then I looked for a free frequency in the 20m band to continue my activity. Unfortunately, the popular F&F frequency on 14.244 Mhz was now occupied, so I switched to 14.288 Mhz. I quickly typed a WhatsApp to Raisa and, as promised, she placed the spot in the DX cluster for me. As expected, this gave me a small pile-up and my CQ flora & fauna call was answered around Europe. OMs from USA (W1OW, William from Massachusetts) and Canada (VE9MY, Len from Nova Scotia) were also present. Despite the cold, I had a lot of fun with my activity. However, from around 1.30 p.m. the forest playground was filled with families and small children, who of course romped around, so I decided to pack up and head home.

Aktivierung Schloss Kleßen / Activation of Klessen Castle

...

After Micha and I drove to tahe small town of Klessen on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 to see Klessen Castle, I made up my mind to activate it while I was on vacation. So far it was with 0 QSOs in the COTA card and I wanted to change that. So on August 19th, 2021, I drove to Klessen with a small radio equipment. On board I had the Yeasu 857d, the 6m GRP mast, my tri-band wire antenna and the HFP1. Of course, my Lenovo ThinkPad should not be missing for logging, either. Opposite the entrance to the castle, a path led into a small cul-de-sac next to a fallow field. Here I could park my car and set up my antennas undisturbed - I thought. But when I had made myself comfortable in the passenger seat with the Lenovo on my lap and the Yeasu on the console, a black van stopped to my left. The man who got out scowled a little. I just thought: "Smile and wave nicely," and greeted him warmly when he finally stood next to me in front of the open vehicle door. "May I ask what is happening here?" he asked a little gruffly, but you could also see his curiosity. "I do amateur radio," I replied gently. He turned his head back and forth and looked at the antennas again, then he just said: "Oh sooooo", and went back to his vehicle. I was amazed that I had gotten rid of him so easily, and now finally started to radio.

I had tuned the HFP1 to 40m and tried to work DR60ANT, who called cq on 7.132 Mhz, as a test. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance in the pile-up. So I looked for a free QRG and started cqing myself. After a good 20 minutes, still nothing had happened. It was a waste of time. So now I plugged in the wire antenna. I had pulled this up on the telescopic mast, which in turn was attached to the trailer hitch of my Rabbit. On 20m, 14,144 Mhz, I didn't have to wait long for the success. However, I had to change the frequency again, because very violent disturbances applied on my QRG. On 14,156 everything was quiet and after 1 1/2 hours I had 52 QSOs in the log and was fully satisfied with it.

1. Mai 2021 - Deutscher Burgentag - Castles On The Air

...

On May 1st, 2021 we - Anselm (DG2HVL), Holger (DD6WM) and I - met on the meadow in front of the village church in Hohennauen-Seeblick. After long preparations and approval from the Rhinow Office and Havelland Health Office, we were able to look forward to our activity day without any worries. The Hohennauen Castle (Kleist von Bornstedt manor) had not yet been activated and we would now be the first to make QSOs from this manor. The building itself is in a ruinous condition (see also the photo on the "Activities" page), but this is irrelevant for activation. We have made good connections in the 20m and 40m bands, some also on the 80m. After we had made our logbooks available to the cota group for upload, there was a certificate as a reward, which you can see on the right.

ICOM IC 7300 & ATAS 120 A

23.01.2021 / Jan 23rd 2021

...

Today the delivery service finally brought the long-awaited package with my new transceiver and antenna. So far I have only heard good things about the ICOM IC 7300 and I am very curious to see how I get on with it. But first OM Holger, DD6WM, helped me to design a stable mounting for the ATAS 120 A antenna. For this we built a roof support on my balcony on which a console with mounting rail was installed. The ATAS is a mobile antenna that is actually mounted on a car roof. The car roof then serves as a counterweight, without which the antenna does not "play". I use an MFJ 1925 controller to tune the antenna. We were surprised that the mounting rail and the console are obviously sufficient as a counterweight. Even in the 40m band, with the help of the controller, I achieve an SWR of less than 1 : 1.5 and the antenna receives and transmits without problems on the shortwave bands from 28 to 7.0 MHz

Flora & Fauna mit/with Raisa R1BIG

DANKE RAISA!!! Das war etwas ganz Besonderes!!!

...

I recently met YL Raisa (R1BIG) on Facebook. We got on really well straight away and decided to do a QSO with each other as soon as possible. Today Raisa activated the Flora & Fauna Reference No. RFF-0564. It is the Lindulovskaya Grove which is situated about an 1,5 hours drive northwest of St. Petersburg. Raisa set up her portable shack in the wood of larchs and started operating at 12.15 p.m. UTC. She had planned to be qrv on 20m and possibly 40m. I really wanted to do a QSO with Raisa, but I can only work on shortwave on 10m from my apartment. So I just packed the bare minimums of equipment (Yaesu FT 857d, my gel battery and the tri-band antenna) and sat with it on the bench next to the sandbox in front of the house. Quickly attached the telescopic mast to the fence and stretched the antenna - my "quick shack" was ready. On 14.244 Mhz I immediately heard Raisa's voice and despite the mega pile-up she was able to receive my signal. So we could actually do our QSO.

THANK YOU RAISA !!! That was something very special!

Urlaubsaktivität vom 12. bis 23. Oktober 2020
Vacation activity from October 12-23, 2020

Michael and I spent our autumn vacation at the Augustenhof campsite in Denmark. This is located on the island of Als, JY001, JO45UB, right next to the Augustenhof lighthouse, DEN 029. By the way, I got the recommendation  about the Augustenhof campsite from Frank, P52BA, who is friends with the campsite operator Annette. THANK YOU dear Frank !!!

To our great delight we were almost the only guests, and I was able to set up my portable antennas on the large meadow directly on the Baltic Sea. I was mostly qrv on 40m and 80m and was able to make QSOs with some OM from DL and dx connections also went very well.

Flora&Fauna-Aktivierung Naturpark Westhavelland

Wir hatten u.a.

Flora & fauna activation Westhavelland Nature Park

Since our journey to the USA had to be canceled due to the corona pandemic, my husband Michael and I spent the best time of the year in our caravan. We have a plot in the Buntspecht camping park. The park is located near the Lake Hohennauen in the Westhavelland Nature Park, which is why I was able to activate the flora and fauna reference DL-FF 0133 during my vacation. At that time I still had my vlass E callsign DO1KYB. We had visits from my D06 comrades DG2HVL and DD6WM, combined with interesting radio experiments; i.a. we tested a homemade antenna for the 80m band (with DG2HVL), and I got a demonstration of FT8 (with DD6WM).

Upgrading

For a long time I had planned to upgrade my amateur radio license from class E to A. Mainly because I also wanted to work on the bands that I wasn't allowed to do with class E. To upgrade I "only" had to pass one more exam in "technology", and it was tough ... at least for someone like me. I have neither the professional background nor a special (mathematical) talent for it. But I really wanted to do it and signed up for the exam in 2018. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to prepare for it, and I canceled the appointment. At the end of 2019 I was determined to go through with it and made an appointment right away: April 27, 2020! Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this appointment was canceled by the Federal Network Agency. They wanted to offer me a new appointment as soon as the exams were taken again. The long-awaited email came at the beginning of August 2020: the exam should take place on September 14, 2020. From now on I studied again every day and was well prepared for the exam. I made full use of the 90 minutes of the exam and passed it. I had already reserved my new callsign: from today on I was DK3YB1

Auf zur Wiese!

5. Juni 2015

Viel Erfolg!

Off to the meadow!

5 June 2015

In preparation for the VHF/ UHF contest, many members of DOK D06 -DL0SP- met on the meadow at the QTH of DC7GS to set up the contest station on this particularly warm spring day.

The construction of the large beam was of course done in team work. As a reward there was a cozy barbecue party. From tomorrow you will hear lots of "cq contest" from here.

Good luck!

As DO1KYB...

... I initially used this small mobile radio. It's the Yaesu FT 7800 and I bought it second hand. In order to be able to use it, I also needed a battery, that's why I bought a gel-lead battery pack with 12 Ah. With this set up I was able to work on 2m as well as 70cm in FM mode.

From cb to amateur radio

Several years went by in which I did not radio. But when my two sons - they were still in elementary school - got walkie talkies from their grandparents for Christmas, I was immediately fascinated again. Of course I needed my own walkie talkie. While the boys radioed with the neighborhood kids, I chatted happily with other parents who lived nearby and played with their children's PMRs. Finally, I decided to go back to CB radio. After purchasing a used CB hand box, however, the disillusionment was great: just oise on all 80 channels and no one to talk to. I surfed the internet and found out that CB was more or less declared "dead" (today I know that is not true). But there was hope: amateur radio was the magic word! I informed myself and learned that the amateur radio test now consisted of multiple-choice questions (you can get more information on this from the Federal Network Agency = Bundesnetzagentur). I got books with the study material and downloaded an app that could be used to study the exam questions. For family reasons, however, I had to put the preparations on hold temporarily. But finally, on 08/18/2014, I successfully passed the exam for the "novice license", i.e. the class E amateur radio. On the same day I bought my first amateur radio, the Baofeng UV-5R, which you can see here. I also got my call sign: DO1KYB! The first steps in my old / new hobby were taken

How it all started

My passion for radio began in 1978. Back then, my best friend bought a Bosch Commander, a small walkie talkie with only one channel, at a flea market. For hours we listened to the "hustle and bustle" on 11m, and it quickly became clear to me that I had to have a box like that, too. For my 11th birthday I got the Bosch HCB 301 as a present. It had 3 channels (4, 10 and 14). From that day on it was my constant companion. I even took it with me to the school pilot service. CB radio was my world - and the starting point for my current hobby.
